Online Appendix 4: Organic residue analysis of Late Bronze Age pottery from Tomb SS at Hala Sultan Tekke: by Julie Dunne, Teresa Bürge and Richard P. Evershed
Abstract
Online Appendix 4 presents the organic residue analyses carried out on 101 potsherds and associated soil samples recovered from Tomb SS at Hala Sultan Tekke. his is achieved through gas chromatography (GC), gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and gas chromatography–combustion–isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-C-IRMS). These methods enable the identification of specific archaeological biomarkers, including terrestrial animal fats (ruminant adipose, dairy and non-ruminant adipose fats), which can provide evidence of vessel use and help determine whether vessels were used for food and drink prior to their deposition in the tomb or were produced specifically for deposition as part of the mortuary ritual.
